Abundance and economy are major reasons why coal is very much in use as fuel. At the current rate of world consumption, coal reserves can still last for another 200 years or so.
Burning coal’s contribution to carbon dioxide levels is a major drawback though. Add to that the contribution to acid rain due to sulfur and nitrogen oxides released during combustion.
